Golf Course Feature: Kings North

Formally known as Myrtle Beach National, Kings North Golf Course remains true to the vibrant history of Myrtle Beach National, while having a distinct personality all of its own.

In 1996, golfing legend Arnold Palmer decided it was time to revamp Myrtle Beach National. For nearly a year the golf course remained under construction. Over 400,000 cubic yards of dirt were brought in, lakes, bunkers and greens were all enlarged, and over 7000 plants were added to the landscaping, including 700 hardwood trees. In the end, Palmer created an outstanding course that was challenging and aesthetically beautiful. The very next year Kings North was voted the best golf course in South Carolina.

The 5th and 6th hole offer risk-reward shots, while the 18th hole has been nicknamed “Bull’s Eye” because it takes that much skill to keep your ball out of any of the 40 sand traps lining the fairway. The 12th hole (originally the 3rd) still sports the “SC” shaped sand traps.

You cannot completely appreciate how great the Kings North course is until you decide to play a round. Palmer’s design encourages golfers to play their best and test their skills. While it is not an impossible course to play, it is one that will require you to know what you are doing. Golfers who love to push their game to the next level will enjoy this course, there is no doubt.

Many events are held at the Kings North Golf Course throughout the year. A pro shop, restaurant and club house are all available for your convenience. You can even bring a junior golfer (16 and under) to play for free when they are accompanied by a paying adult. Kings North is an experience that every avid golfer must have when they visit Myrtle Beach.

Sea Trail - Jones Course at Sea Trail Resort opened in 1990 and has been a favorite of Myrtle Beach Golf fans ever since.

Golf Digest in 2006 ranked Sea Trail - Jones as North Carolina`s "Top 100 Courses". Held a US Open Qualifier and was voted #30 in the "Top 50 Courses in Myrtle Beach". The Myrtle Beach Golf Area with BACK TO BACK PAR 5`s.

OYSTER BAY GOLF LINKS

I was fortune enough to play Oyster Bay in Sunset Beach, NC last week courtsey of the Legends Golf Group. For over 20 years, Oyster Bay has been a favorite among Myrtle Beach Golfers who want a challenging layout with beautiful low-lying marshland views, undulating greens, long par 4`s with reachable par 5`s and two island green par threes.

The Dan Maples design opened in 1983 and won Golf Digest "Resort Course of the Year" in its inaugrael year. Also wining Golf Digest`s "Top 50 Public Courses in the Country in 1990" The par-70 course plays to just under 6,700 yards from all the way back but does have four sets of tees.

Throughout the the round, I think we came across 10 alligators, like this guy here on the very first hole. Overall course was in good shape, greens were consistant, views were awesome, weather was great.

Dan Maples has a long-standing tradition of creating stunning and challenging golf throughout the country and in the Myrtle Beach area. With over 10 designs on the Grand Strand, Oyster Bay is aruguablly his best.

The Dunes Golf & Beach Club: History

The Dunes Golf & Beach Club has been voted the #1 golf course in Myrtle Beach year after year. Yes, it is a very bold statement with so many top courses in the Myrtle Beach area. The whole Dunes experience is first class from every aspect of the operation. The attention to detail, the condition of the course, the clubhouse and most important the staff all give a true southern hospitality welcome. Below is a brief history of where the club started.

HISTORY

The Dunes Golf and Beach Club was but a dream for a group of leading Myrtle Beach citizens in the 1940s. On October 29, 1947, the first meeting was held to discuss the building of a recreational facility, which among other amenities would include a golf course. During the next several months, the citizens continued to work and dream about the building of the golf course.

On May 31, 1948, a meeting was held at Chapin’s Cabin to organize the corporation to build the club. Chapin’s Cabin, a small building located on the property near what is now the 11th tee, has been referred to as the Dunes Club’s first clubhouse.

A few weeks later on June 14, 1948, the first board of directors was established for the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. A Declaration for Charter was submitted to the Secretary of State of South Carolina. The charter was granted one week later on June 22, 1948.

On February 10, 1949, the Myrtle Beach Farms Company conveyed approximately 269.8 acres to the Dunes Golf and Beach Club for the sum of $10.00 and other valuable considerations. Two major conditions were attached to the conveyance: (1) a guarantee that within three years from the date of conveyance an 18-hole golf course would be constructed on the premises and (2) the club operation would continue for a period of not less than 10 years. Both conveyances were met.

Construction began on the Dunes Club and on Saturday, October 22, 1949, nine holes opened for play. Today those holes are the back nine of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. These holes were constructed first because of the difficult terrain. The second nine holes opened for play in December 1950.

On November 4, 1948, Jimmy D’Angelo became the first head professional at the Dunes Club. D’Angelo was known for his commitment to promoting golf along the Grand Strand. His passing on May 18, 2000 was mourned throughout the local golf community.

The original Dunes Clubhouse was completed in 1949. It was updated in 1954 when the lounge and dining rooms were enlarged and air conditioning

was added. In 1960, a large swimming pool and dressing rooms were added to the clubhouse. In 1967, the existing facilities had a major renovation, which took one year to complete. A new wing with a new dining area was added and the clubhouse was completely redecorated.

In 1970, tennis became a major part of the Dunes Club with four tennis courts being constructed. In 1990, six additional tennis courts were added, along with renovations to the Pro Shop and restrooms. The Dunes Club is considered to have one of the best tennis facilities on the Grand Strand.

By the early 1980s, the Dunes’ membership had outgrown the existing clubhouse. On August 11, 1984, a “Demolition Party” was held and members helped to tear down the old clubhouse and collected souvenirs of the “Old Dunes.” The first phase of the new clubhouse opened in July 1985 and featured a new swimming pool complex, Pro Shop, locker rooms, and the Mixed Grill. The completed clubhouse opened officially in January 1986.

In 1992, Robert Trent Jones oversaw an extensive renovation of the golf course. The course greens were replaced with Penn Links bent grass greens for smoother playability. The contours of six holes were modified to make the course more player friendly. The most extensive renovations were the relocation of the 11th green and building a new tee box for hole #8.

In April 2000, the Dunes Golf and Beach Club began a $6 million project to renovate the clubhouse, the driving range and the golf course to accommodate its growing membership. The project was completed in Spring 2001. The renovations to the clubhouse included the addition of the turn restaurant (Waterloo), new guest men’s and ladies locker rooms, larger private locker rooms and private lounges and larger banquet facilities. The decor of the clubhouse changed from a casual beach club style to a more traditional country club atmosphere with elegant mahogany furnishings and richer color schemes.

The driving range was expanded 30 yards in length and 40 yards in depth, which more than doubled the number of stations from 18 to 40. The halfway house was moved to the clubhouse to accommodate this expansion. A bent grass chipping green and a Bermuda grass chipping green and bunker complex were also added to the driving range.

Course renovations included changes to the 18th hole, the addition of a new par 3 and improvements to the drainage system. A new tee box was added to the 18th hole reconfiguring it from a dogleg right to a dogleg left. The new par 3 alternate hole located between the 13th and 14th holes was designed as an extra hole should another hole on the course be closed for maintenance. It will guarantee eighteen, challenging holes for play for Dunes Club golfers.

LEOPARDS CHASE WINS BIG CATS POLL

The newest cat on the beach has won the 2ND poll posted for the month of April winning by more than half of the votes at 56%. Since its opening in February 2007, the course has won other awards like the ESPN / GOLF DIGEST TOP 10 BEST NEW PUBLIC COURSES OVER $75. With beautiful TifSport Bermuda grass fairways and immaculately manicured L-93 bent grass greens is a great compliment of golf designer Tim Cates work. Cate has also created two other Big Cats, Panther's Run Golf Links, Tiger's Eye Golf Links, and a third on the way, Jaguar's Lair Golf Club (Open Fall 2008). With the opening of Jaguars Lair it will bring the Cats total to 90 holes of golf.

Coastal Carolina Wins Big South Men's Golf Championship

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Men's Golf team won their 5th straight Big South title, Tuesday at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, South Carolina.

The Chanticleers finished with a 54-hole total of 874, 16 strokes ahead of runner-up Charleston Southern, with an 890.

Coastal Carolina freshman David Dannelly had medalist honors with a 2-under par 214. Senior Lindsay Reynolds (220) finished fourth, and sophomore Dan Obremski (222) and freshman Tripp McAllister (228) also finished in the top 20.

The Chants also recieve the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals on May 15-17 at Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, TN

Last season the Chants advanced to the NCAA championships and
came away with a 5th place trophy and the best finish in the history of the program.

MONDAY AFTER THE MASTERS

The 14Th annual Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am was a big success. This years event included golfers Annika Sorenstam, Laura Davies, Woody Austin, Chris DiMarco, Jim Thorpe and Lee Elder, and athletes Dan Marino, Bernie Kosar, Gale Sayers, Sterling Sharpe, Kordell Stewart, Chuck Finley and Ken Griffey Sr.

With the event sold out, for the third consecutive year. The event should raise over $400,000, matching the monies raised in each of the past two years for junior golf and education charities.

The tournament was played April 13-14, at the Barefoot Dye course which was the winner of the first ever North Myrtle Beach Golf
poll , "Which Barefoot Resort Course is your favorite?" which had 47% of the votes.
has also been named "Top 20 Pro-Am Golf Tournaments" by Golf for Women magazine. The staff at Barefoot Resort and did an excellently job hosting the event and a standing ovation should be for the Golf Course Super because the golf course was in EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Annika Sorenstam will make her first appearance at the annual Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament to be held this year on April 14Th at the Dye Club at Barefoot Resort & Golf in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Sorenstam was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2003.

Monday After the Masters tournament tickets went on sale last Saturday, February 23rd. Tickets may be purchased at the House of Blues, the Barefoot Resort & Golf pro shops and all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are $10 with children 12 years of age and younger admitted free. All ticket proceeds benefit the Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation, which supports the educational needs of children in South Carolina and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. Last year, the event recorded its second consecutive sell-out and raised $456,000 for the charities.

FOUNDERS CLUB @ PAWLEYS ISLAND OPEN, AND PALMETTO GREENS COUNTRY CLUB NEXT TO OPEN 2008 GOLF SEASON

The Founders Club at Pawleys Island which reopened its doors on Feb. 1, 2008. The first or two redesigns to open this early Spring Golf Season. The old Sea Gull Golf Club which opened is doors back in the late 1960`s by local families was given a face lift which included nearly $7 million in renovations and beautiful 5,000 square foot Clubhouse with wrap around porch which overlooks the 10Th and 18Th hole.

Architect Thomas Walker, once with the Gary Player Design Group, led the $7 million dollar construction project. The front nine is virtually unrecognizable from the old Sea Gull golf course. The changes include Hole #1 being shortened by about 50 yards, and a huge practice putting green has been installed directly behind the tee boxes. You actually step from the putting green to the tee box. The #3 hole now has split sets of tee boxes. #4 has been converted to a par 4, and a lake has been built behind the tee boxes. The #6 hole has been converted to a wonderful risk/reward par 5. Hole #12 now has a split fairway and the green has been moved down closer to the lake. Walker has created a course that is esthetically pleasing to the eye, but near as difficult as it appears.

There are 5 sets of tees on each hole and measures 7007 yards from all the way back. All golf carts have the newest GPS technology with accurate yardages and graphics. With Bermuda fairways and a mixture of Bermuda and Zoysia in the rough, The Founders Club and the TPC of Scottsdale, home of the 2008 Accenture World Match Play Championship, as the only two golf courses in America with Emerald Bermuda greens. A new strand of grass just released from the Champion Turf Company, Emerald Bermuda tolerates the hot South Carolina summer sun and requires less water than other grasses.

The second course during the 2008 golf season to open (March 13,2008 ) is the Palmetto Greens Country Club. The 6,486-yard par-71 is the second Rick Robbins design on the Grand Strand. The first being Crow Creek since leaving the Nicklaus Design Team. Palmetto Greens features more water hazards, than the original Colonial Charters Golf Club designed by John Simpson. Two man-made waterfalls with a "Stadium Feel" around the L93 bent grass greens.

The course which opened in 1988 is changing from a par-72 to a par-71. The back tees which measure 6,486-yard will also have three other tee boxes that will make this new layout measure approximately 6,200, 5,800 and 5,100 yards. Palmetto Greens will have one Par 5 that is 620 yards long making it the "2Nd Longest Hole On The Grand Strand" behind the 18Th Hole at Farmstead

Both of these courses are in EXCELLENT CONDITION, and can be added to any North Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation.

"GOLF FORE EDUCATION" KICKS OFF 2008 GOLF SEASON

The golf season officially kicked off this past Saturday, Feb. 2 at The Long Bay Golf Club. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course was the host facility for the "Golf Fore Education" presented by the Golf Gurus and Sun Cruz Casino. The Inaugural Golf Tournament raised money for the North Myrtle Beach High School Band. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit North Myrtle Beach High School with 50 percent of the contributions given to scholarship programs for graduating seniors and the remainder donated to the North Myrtle Beach High School Band to help support music education.

How to get started in Golf?

Golf is a great game: sometimes rewarding, often frustrating but highly addictive. Getting started in it is actually not so difficult, and hopefully this article can help you avoid some of the pitfalls and point you in the direction of a lifetime of fun (and frustration). Of course, this article can only cover so much. If you really want to get a head start you should consider getting our Golf Beginner Guide, a 270-page publication developed by the owners of LearnAboutGolf.com. It's a great resource (but of course we're a bit biased...).

The very first steps

The biggest mistake by people wanting to start in golf is to rush out and buy a brand new set of shiny and expensive golf clubs. While they are nice to look at you should keep in mind that today's golf equipment comes in great varieties to cater for different golfing types and abilities. Since you're just starting out you do not know which set fits you best. Just imagine the envious looks you get at the driving range when you come with your $2000 set, and the subsequent laughter when you try and just 'hack away' - not worth the embarrassment! Once you spend a few hundred or even thousand $$ on a set that doesn't suit your style you're stuck with it or you have to sell it to somebody else at a loss.

If you feel you want your own clubs get a half set. This generally comprises of five irons and perhaps two woods and a putter. Usually the irons are the odd numbers 3,5,7,9 and a wedge. These clubs are more than enough to get you started. There is no reason to purchase a driver (#1 wood) at this stage, and you may want to consider utility clubs. A better alternatively: most Driving Ranges will have clubs for hire, so you can try out a few different ones. You can also borrow one or two clubs from a friend. The shortest iron (nine iron) or a wedge are the best clubs to start, practicing with it will give you the feeling of hitting the ball in the air and should be fairly straight forward.

Where to best buy golf clubs?

Most Pro shops and driving ranges sell second hand clubs. They will also be able to offer you advice and let you try some clubs out. Just make sure that you don't pay more for a used 'branded' set than you would for a brand new 'clone glub set' (see below).

Alternatively, nearly all driving ranges will have clubs for hire if you want to have a go without committing to a set until you get the hang of it.

Or ask other people at the driving range, you will soon find out that many have another set of clubs at home because they made the exact same mistakes I mentioned above. Make sure you try before you buy, if they fit (and only if they fit!) you can often get them for a steal. Or try advertising in some classified sites for second hand clubs. Alternatively, you can also check some online auctions. One of our readers, CJ Matthews, suggests that swap meets and garage sales are always good places to get cheap gear. Having said that, the advantage of a brand new set is that it provides a great boost in confidence and committment, compared to playing with a used, second hand set.
